Oil and gas drone operations carry additional regulatory considerations beyond standard CAA requirements — particularly in relation to site safety and COMAH protocols.

Standard commercial drones are not ATEX-rated and must not be operated within classified explosive atmospheres (ATEX zones). Before any oil and gas site deployment, the site ATEX zone classification must be confirmed with the site HSE team and drone operations planned to ensure the drone remains outside classified zones at all times. This is a non-negotiable site safety requirement.
